XCB: Advanced Approach to Thermal Management Delivers Long-Term Value for Panel Builders & Industrial End Users

By: Rocco Bressanelli

In electrical enclosure cooling, control is far more than a secondary feature. It directly impacts performance, energy efficiency, system reliability, uptime, integration with plant infrastructure, and installation speed.

Its advanced functionality is designed to simplify the work of engineers, panel builders, and commissioning teams responsible for electrical enclosures used in critical applications such as industrial automation, power distribution, telecommunications, and installations operating in demanding environments.

Protected Electronics for Harsh Environments

The XCB controller is installed inside the unit, within the enclosure compartment. By being isolated from the external environment, it is protected from dust, oil mist, humidity, and temperature fluctuations commonly found in industries such as manufacturing, chemical processing, and food production. This design significantly extends operating life while reducing maintenance interventions associated with electronic component failures. The user interface display is mounted on the exterior of the unit, allowing operators to view and adjust operating parameters, check alarms, and monitor temperatures in real time without opening either the cooling unit or the electrical enclosure.

Native Modbus RTU Connectivity for Plant-Wide Monitoring

One of XCB’s key advantages is continuous remote monitoring through RS485/Modbus RTU communication. This capability allows air conditioners and heat exchangers to be seamlessly integrated into facility monitoring systems using one of the most widely adopted open protocols in industrial automation.

The result is simplified connectivity with BMS platforms, PLCs, and centralized control systems.

Through Modbus communication, users can:

  • Monitor enclosure temperature and operating status
  • Access real-time operating data and build historical performance records
  • Adjust selected parameters remotely, including temperature setpoints
  • Receive and manage alarm notifications to simplify troubleshooting, maintenance, and long-term performance verification

In addition to serial communication, XCB provides dedicated alarm contacts and remote enable/door-open management signals, ensuring basic monitoring capabilities even when a digital network is unavailable.

Sequencing, Redundancy & Advanced Reliability Features

In critical applications where continuous cooling is essential, simply installing two cooling units in parallel is not enough. Effective redundancy requires coordination. XCB’s Sequencing function enables two Cosmotec air conditioners or heat exchangers to communicate and manage redundant operation through two key features:

  • Automatic Rotation: The two units automatically alternate operation, balancing runtime hours and helping synchronize maintenance schedules.
  • Automatic Failover: If one unit generates an alarm condition or enclosure temperature exceeds a predefined threshold, the second unit automatically activates to provide backup cooling without operator intervention.

This approach improves the management of redundant cooling configurations while enhancing overall system reliability—without requiring dedicated controllers or external logic systems. The result is reduced wiring, fewer components, and fewer potential points of failure.

For Watherm CNW heat exchangers equipped with Control 8, XCB also provides leak detection functionality. This additional layer of protection helps safeguard electrical enclosures from issues caused by condensation or accidental hydraulic circuit leaks.

Quick Start-Up: Faster Commissioning, Fewer Errors

The Quick Start-Up function performs an automatic system check during startup, verifying proper component operation before final commissioning. This feature complements several installation-friendly design elements intended to reduce installation time, minimize errors, and simplify field operations:

  • Quick-connect power and signal connections, including UL Listed versions
  • Two-point mounting inserts for easier positioning and securing of cooling units
  • Protherm mounting cutouts compatible with previous-generation models, simplifying retrofit projects without enclosure modifications
  • A single mounting pattern across the Compact Protherm product range, helping standardize installation procedures

High Performance with Reduced Energy Consumption

High cooling performance and energy efficiency are core characteristics of all Cosmotec thermal management solutions. These results stem from careful product development, extensive testing, and the use of high-quality components.

The XCB controller further contributes to energy savings through several intelligent control functions:

  • SEM and SEM2 functions reduce or eliminate internal fan energy consumption when thermal loads are low
  • Support for a remote temperature probe helps minimize the risk of hot spots in enclosure areas located farther from the cooling unit
  • Precise temperature control is achieved through modulation of Watherm heat exchanger valves and management of optional enclosure heaters on air conditioning units
  • Condenser fan speed can be automatically reduced when operating conditions permit, lowering noise levels while maintaining cooling performance

With XCB, Cosmotec brings a more advanced approach to thermal management—one where technology, reliability, and engineering expertise come together to deliver long-term value for panel builders and industrial end users alike.
