Apex Automation Ltd. Announces Dan Reid as Vice President of Business Development

Apex is proud to officially welcome Dan Reid to their growing Calgary team as Apex Automation Ltd’s Vice President of Business Development! With a wealth of experience, a relationship-driven leadership style, and a passion for building long-term connections, Dan brings a fresh spark to their mission of redefining what partnership looks like in the automation industry. Throughout his career, Dan has earned a reputation for doing exactly what he says he will—building trust not through quick wins, but through integrity, consistency, and intention. It’s no surprise that of Apex’s core values—Intelligence, Ingenuity, and Integrity—it’s integrity that resonates with him most. As he puts it: “You’ll have a short and shallow career in sales without it.” Outside of work, Dan is just as committed to serving others. He recently celebrated 10 years volunteering at the Alberta Children’s Rotary Flames House Hospice Center and has spent nearly as long coaching youth football. Whether as a father, mentor, or teammate, Dan leads with heart—believing that life and success are about being something for someone else, not just existing for yourself. A unique piece of Dan’s personal story? He finds his creative flow not in a boardroom—but in his basement Bread Lab, where baking is both his therapy and his art. (Apex is already counting down to the first bread drop-off!). In his new role, Dan envisions tighter integration between Apex’s four core services—Engineering | OT Systems & Security | Systems Integration | Field Services—and the business development strategy. By strengthening cross-department collaboration and aligning deliverables with client goals, he sees an opportunity to build something that redefines success in the automation industry.

ABB & Charbone Hydrogen Sign Agreement to Advance North American Green Hydrogen Production Facilities

ABB and Charbone Hydrogen Corporation have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) agreement to collaborate on the development of up to 15 modular and scalable green hydrogen production facilities across North America over the next five years, providing a clean fuel source for existing hydrogen users and heavy industrial processes such as steelmaking, which currently use grey hydrogen as an energy source. The MoU scope positions ABB as the preferred supplier for the design, engineering, fabrication, testing and supply of modular and standard electrical substations (eHouses) for the interconnection between production facilities and local utilities. ABB will support Charbone in standardizing basic engineering for systems and components across its project portfolio, to increase energy efficiency and reliability. Future scope may also see ABB operate as the main automation, electrification and telecom contractor depending on project requirements. Among the sites covered by the collaboration is Charbone’s flagship Sorel-Tracy facility near Montreal in Québec, Canada. The facility is expected to be connected to the Hydro-Québec grid by the end of quarter two in 2025, using hydro electricity to power green hydrogen electrolyzers. The plant will create a blueprint for the design and engineering of modular and scalable equipment for other sites being developed by Charbone. The next project to get underway will be in the greater Detroit area in the US, which is the manufacturing base for major automotive companies.

Celebrating a Legacy: 175 Years Globally, 50 Years in Canada

Celebrating a Legacy: 175 Years Globally, 50 Years in Canada

The year 2025 is truly special for Weidmüller as they proudly celebrate not just 50 remarkable years in Canada but also their 175th anniversary globally—an extraordinary achievement few companies can claim. This legacy is a testament to their relentless pursuit of innovation and commitment to refining their offerings. But Weidmüller’s journey doesn’t stop here; they continue to push boundaries and drive advancements in electrical connectivity. Founded near Chemnitz, Germany, Weidmüller began its journey as a textile company, specializing in textile production. Over time, the company diversified, venturing into the manufacture of press studs and pioneering its own innovative fastening system—an early form of connection technology that combined tradition with ingenuity. In the mid-20th century, after re-establishing its roots in Detmold, Weidmüller shifted focus towards electrical connectivity. The invention of the world’s first plastic-insulated terminal block marked a turning point, revolutionizing cabinet building by replacing fragile porcelain models with a more robust solution. This breakthrough laid the foundation for the company’s first export ventures. By the late 1950s, Weidmüller had expanded across Europe, and by the 1970s, it had firmly established its global footprint.

ABB Signs Agreement with Dow as the Automation Partner to Support Path2Zero Ethylene Complex in Canada

ABB has signed a Leveraged Procurement Agreement (LPA) to support as the automation partner for Dow’s Path2Zero project at Fort Saskatchewan in Alberta, Canada. According to Dow, the project, which is currently under construction, will create the world’s first net-zero Scope 1 and 2 greenhouse gas emissions ethylene and derivatives complex, producing the essential building blocks needed for many of the materials and products that society relies on. The project will involve a brownfield expansion and retrofit of Dow’s existing manufacturing site 330 km north of Calgary, which when complete aims to decarbonize approximately 20 percent of Dow’s global ethylene capacity. The Path2Zero project represents one of the largest private sector investments in Alberta’s history, according to the province’s government. To achieve net-zero Scope 1 and 2 emissions, Dow has designed the site to recover and convert its cracker off-gas to hydrogen, which will be used as a clean fuel in the site’s furnaces. In addition, carbon dioxide emissions will be captured and stored permanently, reducing existing emissions and abating most emissions from the addition of the site’s new capacity.
