PLC Agent: CODESYS-Integrated Engineering Assistant Combines Generative AI with WAGO-Specific Technical Knowledge to Support Programming, Troubleshooting & Technical Information Access

As industrial automation systems become more sophisticated, engineers and programmers are being asked to manage increasingly complex projects while facing pressure to reduce development time and work more efficiently. WAGO is addressing this challenge with the WAGO PLC Agent, an AI-powered engineering assistant designed specifically to support PLC programmers and system integrators working with WAGO automation technology.

Available as an add-on for CODESYS, the PLC Agent combines generative AI with WAGO-specific technical knowledge to provide contextual assistance throughout the engineering process. Rather than functioning as a general-purpose AI chatbot, the tool is designed around automation engineering tasks and can draw on WAGO product documentation, CODESYS programming libraries and example projects when responding to user requests.


Bringing AI into the Engineering Workflow

Automation professionals often need to move between product manuals, programming libraries, project documentation and other technical resources to find the information required for a project. The PLC Agent is designed to simplify this process by allowing engineers to interact with technical information using natural-language prompts.

Users can ask technical questions, request explanations, receive assistance with code generation and access information relevant to WAGO automation products directly within their engineering workflow.

Through its integration with CODESYS, the PLC Agent can also access information from an open project when the Project Integration function is enabled. This can include the device tree, library manager and current error messages, providing the assistant with additional project context when responding to a request.

By bringing technical knowledge and AI assistance closer to the engineering environment, the PLC Agent can help reduce the time spent manually searching for information and allow engineers to focus more attention on developing and troubleshooting their applications.

Supporting Programming, Troubleshooting & Knowledge Access

The PLC Agent is designed to assist with common engineering activities throughout the development process.

For programming tasks, engineers can use the tool to generate Structured Text code, obtain explanations of existing code and receive guidance on the use of specific WAGO libraries. The assistant can also help identify relevant technical information when users are working through unfamiliar aspects of an automation project.

This can be particularly useful when engineers need to understand existing code, begin working with an unfamiliar library or locate information contained across extensive technical documentation.

The objective is not to replace engineering expertise, but to provide automation professionals with an additional tool for handling routine information and programming tasks more efficiently.


WAGO-Specific Knowledge Adds Industrial Context

A key element of the PLC Agent is the technical knowledge available to the system.

In addition to the capabilities of its underlying AI model, WAGO provides the PLC Agent with a dedicated knowledge base that includes WAGO documentation, CODESYS programming libraries and example CODESYS projects.

This gives the assistant access to information directly related to the technologies engineers are using, allowing it to provide responses with greater context for WAGO automation applications.

The system is also designed for interactive use. Engineers can refine their prompts, provide additional project details and continue a dialogue with the assistant as they work through a particular engineering task.


AI as an Assistant, Not a Replacement for Engineering Judgment

While AI can accelerate access to information and assist with programming tasks, engineering validation remains essential.

Responses generated by the PLC Agent are AI-generated and their accuracy cannot be guaranteed. Engineers remain responsible for reviewing, testing and validating generated information and code before using it in an application.

The PLC Agent is therefore intended to complement the expertise of programmers and system integrators rather than replace it. By supporting repetitive tasks, technical research and programming activities, the technology can allow engineering professionals to focus more of their time on application-specific decisions and problem solving.


Designed for the Evolving Automation Workplace

The PLC Agent brings AI assistance directly into the CODESYS engineering environment and combines it with WAGO-specific technical knowledge. This approach extends the use of generative AI beyond general information retrieval by applying it directly to day-to-day automation engineering activities.
