SICK: Creating Specific SensorApps in a Data Flow

June 11, 2020

Create individual SensorApps on your own–without programming skills–and solve new automation tasks, easily. Starting at the end of the year, this will all be possible in the SICK AppStudio, part of the SICK AppSpace eco-system.

“Automation concepts are rarely standard”, explains Dr. Timo Mennle, SICK AppSpace Strategic Product Manager at SICK AG. Even if you are supposedly dealing with a standard problem, additional configuration and customization work is required for many projects. These are details that could quickly result in higher costs and delays during installation. SICK customers can create their own individualized SensorApps to solve individual sensor applications — without having to program anything.

SICK AppSpace opens doors

In the SICK AppSpace eco-system, programmable sensors and edge devices can be configured for new tasks using SensorApps. Many apps are already available for download via the SICK AppPool. For specific applications, SensorApps can also be used independently by the customer and developed together with SICK experts with the support of a developer community. Until now, basic programming skills were required to generate your own SensorApps in SICK AppStudio.

With a new graphic interface in SICK AppStudio, users can now solve specific sensor applications even without programming skills by configuring and linking pre-defined function blocks in a data flow. The starting point is always figuring out what the sensor has to do: “If a customer wants to differentiate between and count deodorant bottles using the cap color, he creates a data flow from function blocks existing in a library. After every step, he gets a preview of the result and can adjust the configuration right away”, says Mennle of the creation process. Thanks to the open architecture of SensorApps, there is still the option of adjusting the source code of function blocks to implement more challenging applications and individual requirements.

New SensorApps for the AppPool

“By graphically processing data flows, we create the foundation for a larger target and user group. Then more users can take advantage of this for their applications”, says Mennle. The rising demand for new and adapted function blocks can be satisfied from the growing community of developers. The diversity and possibilities of the SICK AppPool are growing, as are the fields of application of sensors and sensor systems.

SICK has come out with the AS30 sensor arrays. Array sensors operate on the proximity scanning principle. They detect even the smallest edges based on differences in grayscale values within the field-of-view. Positioning of, for example, a paper web based on the web edge or a contrast line is only one of many possible applications. Widths, diameters, and gaps can also be detected. In reflector mode, the array sensors can even detect transparent materials.

    SICK: Innovation on the Move

Wherever material is transported or moved, there is a serious danger of collisions between machines, vehicles or obstacles. Incidents like this can not only increase costs, but also significantly disrupt the operational process. With Visionary AI-Assist, SICK has developed an AI-supported solution that precisely and selectively records objects and people. The system issues warnings in good time, minimizing the risk of collisions. Every day, machine operators face the challenging task of maneuvering huge vehicles weighing several tons, such as front-end loaders or dump trucks, through complex working areas. Narrow roads, obstacles, blind spots and the dynamic movement of people and other machines demand a high degree of concentration. Visionary AI-Assist from SICK combines the robust 3D camera Visionary-B Two and the intelligent Software AI-Assist. Thanks to 3D snapshot stereoscopy, the camera provides high-resolution depth and color data in real time. The camera records both people and objects with millimeter precision, even if they are only partly visible. Depending on requirements, the field of view can be adjusted to cover a wide area or focus on the immediate vicinity.

Electronics Manufacturing Meets Enhanced Safety & Efficiency

In electronics manufacturing, every minute counts. PT-Elektrik understands this very well. That’s why they have decided to optimize their quality assurance processes with advanced robotics and innovative software solutions to meet increasing demands. The SICK safety system sBot Speed URCap is making their processes not only more efficient, but also safer. PT-Elektrik, a recognized name in automation and quality assurance, utilizes a universal robot e-series (also known as a URe robot) to set new standards in its quality assurance process for printed circuit boards (PCBs). Because the robot’s working area is near to other test stations used by people, the area around the robot needed to be safeguarded. The solution had to be simple, and quick to implement.
