Nexans Is Investing in Canada & Upgrading Their Montreal Mill to Help Accelerate Canadian Electrification
Last Thursday, October 29, Nexans welcomed Industry Minister Mélanie Joly and Stéphane Séjourné, Executive Vice-President of the European Commission, to their copper rod mill in Montreal, Canada’s only copper rod mill, founded in 1931.
Copper cathode comes from the refinery next door which Nexans turn it into a rod and that rod becomes finished cable at their plants in Fergus, Weyburn and Trenton. From rod to reel they are Canada’s only vertically integrated wire and cable manufacturer. For the utilities, contractors and project teams who count on them, it means they are a reliable partner. To get cable where it’s needed, when it’s needed so projects keep moving.
Nexans is investing in Canada by upgrading the Montreal mill, adding a new medium voltage line in Weyburn, as well as in-house PVC compounding in Fergus, and the Trenton plants that joined their network last December. Canada needs to roughly double its electricity grid over the next 25 years and that requires suppliers who can deliver here, on schedule, at scale, and that is what they have been working on.
As Canada and Europe deepen their industrial ties, this mill is a working example: European ownership, Canadian roots back to 1911, and Canadian jobs on the floor.
Thank you, Minister Joly and Executive Vice-President Séjourné, for seeing it first-hand.
