Endress+Hauser’s Gammapilot FMG50 Revolutionizes Radiometric Measurement in Challenging Environments

October 21, 2020

In the field of radiometric measurement, technological hurdles had prevented the development of a 2-wire, loop-powered compact transmitter – until now. Endress+Hauser’s new Gammapilot FMG50 incorporates a 2-wire compact transmitter that requires only a fraction of the energy of its predecessor to achieve comparable measurement performance. This revolutionary technology, the first of its kind, offers many user benefits over existing compact radiometric measurement transmitters, all of which require external power supplies that add to their cost and complexity.

Named Product of the Year 2020 at the recent China International Industry Fair, the Gammapilot FMG50 uses a unique, patented high voltage generation to overcome that limitation; its 2-wire connectivity supplies signal and adequate power without the need for external power. This is particularly important where the measuring point is in a hazardous zone or out-of-reach area.

Beyond surmounting that challenge, the Gammapilot FMG50 offers an extraordinary range of benefits in safety, reliability, as well as its intelligent and advanced functionality. It builds on the success of the Gammapilot FMG60, Endress+Hauser’s first multifunction, compact transmitter while adding many enhancements in performing level measurement for liquids or solids in process vessels such as reactors and autoclaves. It also performs density and interface measurements and is ideal for use where other measuring principles cannot be applied due to corrosion, abrasion, viscosity or toxicity.  Fields of application include the oil and gas sector as well as the mining and metals, cement and chemical industries.

Not only does the Gammapilot FMG50’s power technology save on installation and energy costs, maintenance is simpler and safer. Radiometric measurement is performed outside the vessel being analyzed. With other 2-wire or 4-wire gamma transmitter technology, maintenance requires disengaging and securing the external power supply against accidental activation, which also renders the measurement functions temporarily inoperable. With the Gammapilot FGM50, the intrinsically safe ex-concept allows safe maintenance work even during on-going measuring operations. Replacement is quick and easy with the interchangeable data module. And there is no need for reparametrization or recalibration.

With the Gammapilot FMG50, there also are no restrictions even when high temperature and high pressure are present. Whereas conventional measuring instruments require water cooling in high temperature environments, the Gammapilot FGM50 does not, solving this with high quality sensor material and design that ensures minimal self-heating of the device’s electronics. Dispensing with water cooling is another way it saves users on planning, installation and operator costs.

With the latest generation of Gammapilots including the FMG50, operators also can communicate with the sensor using Bluetooth technology and the SmartBlue app from Endress+Hauser. All product and diagnostic data are available for employees at a safe distance from measuring points in hard-to-reach or hazardous areas.

ADVANCED Motion Controls Takes Servo Drives to New Heights (and Depths) with FlexPro Extended Environment Product Line

Advanced Motion Controls is proud to announce the addition of six new CANopen servo drives with Extended Environment capabilities to their FlexPro line. These new drives join AMC’s existing EtherCAT Extended Environment FlexPro drives, making the FlexPro line the go-to solution for motion control applications in harsh environments.

Many motion control applications take place in conditions that are less than ideal, such as extreme temperatures, high and low pressures, shocks and vibrations, and contamination. Electronics, including servo drives, can malfunction or sustain permanent damage in these conditions.

Mouser: Industrial Ethernet vs Fieldbus – Architecture, TSN & Migration

Fieldbuses once replaced bundles of wiring with shared, deterministic networks. For years, they carried control signals reliably and predictably. However, as equipment, sensors, and data systems proliferated, fieldbus limitations emerged. The central issue today is real-time operational visibility. Engineers need networks that move control data, diagnostics, and process information across the plant as reliably as… Read More…
