Meltric Switch-Rated Plugs & Receptacles: Designed to Allow Qualified Users to Safely Make & Break Connections Under Full Load

In industrial environments, disconnecting equipment is almost never as simple as “unplug it and go.” Motors, machinery, processing equipment, and portable power connections require safe load-breaking, reliable isolation, and protection against exposure to live parts. This is why E.B. Horsman & Son stocks Meltric Switch-Rated plugs and receptacles.

Meltric’s DS and DSN Series Switch-Rated devices combine the safety and functionality of a disconnect switch with the convenience of a plug and receptacle. They are designed to allow qualified users to safely make and break connections under full load, while helping protect workers from live parts, arcing, and potential arc flash exposure.

How Meltric Switch-Rated Plugs & Receptacles Protect Workers

Meltric Switch-Rated plugs and receptacles use DECONTACTOR technology, which integrates several safety-focused features into a single device, including:

  • Dead-front construction
  • Enclosed arc chambers
  • Spring-loaded silver-nickel butt-style contacts
  • Push-button disconnection
  • A safety shutter that blocks access to live receptacle contacts
  • Keying options to help prevent incompatible connections

Together, these features are designed to ensure the load is disconnected, the plug contacts are de-energized, and live parts are isolated before the plug can be removed.

Rated for Motor & Branch Circuit Switching

Meltric Switch-Rated devices are CSA and UL listed for motor circuit and branch circuit disconnect switching, depending on the model and application. This allows them to be used as approved line-of-sight disconnect switches in many applications, while also simplifying equipment connections and disconnections. Models are available with ratings up to:

  • 200 A for branch circuit disconnect switching
  • 100 hp for motor circuit disconnect switching
  • Short-circuit close and withstand ratings up to 100 kA when used with appropriate RK1 fuses

The Meltric Safety Shutter

A key part of Meltric’s design is the safety shutter. Before the plug can be removed from the receptacle, the device must be placed in the “OFF” position and rotated. This automatically closes and locks the safety shutter over the receptacle contacts, creating an insulating barrier before separation can occur.

The shutter can only be opened when an electrically compatible plug is inserted and rotated into place. Meltric also offers multiple keying arrangements to help ensure that only compatible plugs and receptacles can be connected. For industrial teams, these features can help reduce the risk of accidental exposure and support safer maintenance, equipment changeouts, and day-to-day operations.

Meltric Industrial Plugs & Receptacles Built for Demanding Environments

Meltric Switch-Rated plugs and receptacles are built for repeated use in tough operating conditions. Their spring-loaded silver-nickel contacts help maintain consistent electrical performance over thousands of operations. They are also designed with corrosion-resistant hardware and durable casing options, including reinforced polyester and aluminum alloy, to support industrial use.

Depending on the application, Meltric Switch-Rated devices can help:

  • Improve worker safety during equipment connection and disconnection
  • Reduce downtime during equipment changeouts
  • Support lockout/tagout procedures
  • Simplify line-of-sight disconnect requirements
  • Improve reliability in wet, corrosive, or heavy-duty environments
  • Reduce the need for separate disconnect switches in some applications
