Bell Canada & Cohere Forge Strategic Partnership to Deliver Sovereign AI-Powered Solutions for Government and Business

Bell Canada and security-first enterprise AI company Cohere recently announced a strategic partnership to provide full-stack sovereign AI solutions for government and enterprise customers across Canada, and to deploy proprietary, secure AI solutions within Bell. Cohere will make its secure enterprise-grade AI solutions available through Bell AI Fabric, providing government and enterprise customers with access to fully sovereign, advanced models and customized applications. This includes leveraging North, Cohere’s agentic AI platform for both customers and Bell employees. In turn, Bell will become Cohere’s preferred Canadian AI infrastructure provider, while Cohere will become Bell’s preferred Canadian agentic AI solution and LLM provider. Together, Bell Canada and Cohere will offer a turnkey solution for Canadian organizations that want to deploy world-class AI capabilities, with Cohere now providing cutting edge enterprise AI software to the expanding Bell AI Fabric ecosystem.

Government of Canada Invests $28.7 Million to Train Clean Energy Workers & Expand AI Research Capacity

Through the Sustainable Jobs Training Fund, the Government of Canada is investing over $9 million over three years in the AI Pathways: Energizing Canada’s Low-Carbon Workforce project. Led by the Alberta Machine Intelligence Institute (Amii), this initiative will help nearly 5,000 Canadian energy workers gain AI and machine learning skills for careers in wind, solar, geothermal and hydrogen energy. Training will offer both online and in-person formats, tailored to meet the diverse needs of mid-career workers, industry associations, and unions across the country.

Training More Than 17,300 Canadian Workers to Help Build the Strongest Skilled Trades Workforce in the G7

The Government of Canada is building one strong Canadian economy. To do so, Canada needs the strongest skilled trades workforce in the G7. By collaborating with unions, the federal government is supporting workers, so they get the skills and training they need and is also creating well-paying sustainable jobs for generations to come. On August 12, while speaking at a conference with the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers, the Honourable John Zerucelli, Secretary of State (Labour), on behalf of the Honourable Patty Hajdu, Minister of Jobs and Families and Minister responsible for the Federal Economic Development Agency for Northern Ontario, announced close to $10 million in funding for the Western Joint Electrical Training Society. This project will provide innovative, hands-on training to construction electrician apprentices, journeypersons and other workers across Canada to address green skills, knowledge, and competency gaps. Secretary of State Zerucelli also announced more than $3 million to the National Electrical Trade Council for a project that will train Red Seal powerline technicians to use drones for powerline maintenance to support the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions. Together, these projects will mean nearly 17,350 workers will be able to upgrade or gain new skills.

It Will Take More than AI for Canadian Manufacturers to Succeed in Today’s Global Trade Landscape: Insights from NGen CEO Jayson Myers

AI alone won’t solve the challenges facing Canadian manufacturers in the face of evolving global tariffs. It will take a willingness to turn convention on its head by investing in a mix of emerging technologies and advanced materials, says industry innovation leader Jayson Myers, CEO of Hamilton, Ontario-based NGen. What’s needed, said Myers, is for manufacturers to think about what other technologies are required and “it’s never as easy as saying I’m going to invest in AI alone.” He suggested taking a more holistic approach to successful technology adoption by looking for opportunities to collect high-quality, reliable data that will boost AI systems or creating higher-performing materials and then applying that to do things differently. In fact, if Canada continues to put in the right effort and focus on investing in innovation, he believes the Canadian manufacturing sector has the potential to leapfrog any country.

ABB & SimGenics Collaborate on Simulator-Based Training for Nuclear Sector in North America

ABB has signed a MoU with SimGenics to support the development and provision of engineering, training and distributed control system (DCS) simulators for the nuclear energy industry, primarily in North America. The collaboration comes at an important time, with both Canadian and US governments implementing policy frameworks to stimulate the deployment of nuclear energy to generate electricity. Drawing on their collective expertise, the MoU will allow ABB and SimGenics to explore how they can support the greenfield power generation industry predominantly. This will include complete plant process model and simulation across conventional large nuclear power plants, small modular reactors (SMR) and advanced modular reactor (AMR) facilities. As well as being installed at offsite R&D centers for testing and validation purposes during the design stage, the simulators can also be used onsite at operational nuclear power plants as engineering and training systems.

61% of Cybersecurity Professionals Plan AI Adoption as Manufacturing Faces Growing Cyber Risks

Rockwell Automation has released the cybersecurity findings from its 10th annual “State of Smart Manufacturing Report.” Drawing insights from more than 1,500 manufacturing leaders across 17 of the top manufacturing countries, the report reflects how cybersecurity is becoming a central business issue. One third of respondents have direct information technology (IT) and operational technology (OT) cybersecurity responsibilities. As manufacturers advance smart operations, the integration between IT and OT increases the risk of cyberattacks. The report shows that manufacturers are beginning to use artificial intelligence (AI) to help manage these risks to strengthen protection.

ABB to Invest More Than CA$130 Million in Canadian R&D and Manufacturing

ABB has announced that it will invest more than CA$130 million to expand the R&D and production capacity of its advanced power protection and grid resilience technologies in Canada. The investment in Montreal, Quebec will combine ABB’s existing Iberville and Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu facilities at a new greenfield location. This will enable ABB to meet increasing demand in key growth industries, including utilities, renewables, transportation, and residential and infrastructure projects across Canada. The new 340,000 sq. ft. manufacturing and R&D facility will be more than 33 percent larger than the two locations it replaces and will incorporate advanced production automation and digital technologies. Combining the existing ABB operations at Iberville and Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu will bring more than 600 existing employees from manufacturing, R&D, engineering, testing and support functions into one location. As new product lines are added and production increases in the future, further jobs will be created.
