Visionary AI-Assist Minimizes Collision Risks for Mobile Machines Operating in Challenging Environments

Wherever material is transported or moved, there is a serious danger of collisions between machines, vehicles or obstacles. Incidents like this can not only increase costs, but also significantly disrupt the operational process. With Visionary AI-Assist, SICK has developed an AI-supported solution that precisely and selectively records objects and people. The system issues warnings in good time, minimizing the risk of collisions.

Oct 21, 2025 - SICK Visionary AI-Assist Minimizes Collision Risks for Mobile Machines Operating in Challenging Environments

Every day, machine operators face the challenging task of maneuvering huge vehicles weighing several tons, such as front-end loaders or dump trucks, through complex working areas. Narrow roads, obstacles, blind spots and the dynamic movement of people and other machines demand a high degree of concentration. Dust, low visibility and changing weather conditions make it even more difficult to monitor the environment on a wide scale. Even with years of experience, it is possible to overlook other machines or people.

Traditional aids such as mirrors, acoustic warning signals or simple cameras can only support to a limited extent. As a result, false alarms and delayed warnings lessen trust in the systems and increase stress levels. These factors can also lead to expensive collisions, damage to machines and infrastructure and unplanned downtimes. An intelligent assistance system that reliably recognizes people and objects, covers blind spots and prioritizes relevant warnings significantly eases the burden on employees. Such a system also reduces the risk of collisions and enables smooth operation.

Collision Avoidance Thanks to Visionary AI-Assist

Visionary AI-Assist from SICK combines the robust 3D camera Visionary-B Two and the intelligent Software AI-Assist. Thanks to 3D snapshot stereoscopy, the camera provides high-resolution depth and color data in real time. The camera records both people and objects with millimeter precision, even if they are only partly visible. Depending on requirements, the field of view can be adjusted to cover a wide area or focus on the immediate vicinity.

At the same time, all data is analyzed directly on the sensor and warnings are prioritized according to urgency, reducing the number of false alarms. Flexible zone configuration and precise distance measurement further increase reliability. These benefits are made possible by a specially trained neural network on a dedicated high-performance AI chip.

For targeted use in demanding outdoor environments, Visionary AI-Assist features a robust housing (IP67/IP69K) and an extended temperature range from -40°C to +55°C. An optional anti-vibration mounting kit effectively absorbs shocks. Additional accessories such as a protection hood ensure that dust, rain and dirt do not impair the clear view. The front of the camera is also protected against mechanical stress and direct solar radiation.

By detecting critical situations early and providing precise warnings, Visionary AI-Assist actively helps personnel to maneuver large mobile work machines. A 2D live view also provides a comprehensive overview of the situation. Even autonomous vehicles such as forklifts or transport vehicles can be equipped with the intelligent assistance system.

This is because reliable object and person recognition is a basic requirement, especially in areas where there is no direct operation. This is the only way to prevent collisions and enable adaptive automation. Common interface standards such as Ethernet and CAN, as well as digital inputs and outputs, allow flexible and easy integration into mobile machines in both scenarios.

Design Systems Canada Provides Insights on the Future of Supply Chains in Canada

The current state of Canadian manufacturing and its intricate supply chain is one of significant change. Over the past few years, global events have exposed vulnerabilities, forcing us to rethink how we move goods and materials. The reality is stark: relying solely on distant, complex supply lines leaves businesses exposed. Recent disruptions have taught us that lesson.  Within these challenges lie significant opportunities. Currently there is a powerful shift towards supply chain resilience; a concept that goes beyond simply recovering from setbacks. It’s about building systems that anticipate and withstand shocks. One crucial strategy gaining traction is nearshoring. Bringing production closer to home not only reduces lead times and shipping costs but also strengthens local economies. Consider this: a recent study by the Canadian Manufacturers & Exporters (CME) indicated that 78% of Canadian manufacturers are actively exploring or have implemented nearshoring strategies. This trend isn’t just a fleeting response; it’s a strategic move to build long-term stability. The role of Supply Chain Ontario and similar initiatives cannot be overstated. These programs are vital in fostering collaboration, providing resources, and driving innovation. They are helping businesses navigate the complexities of modern supply chains, from implementing advanced technologies to optimizing logistics. But what about the future? How can Canada truly solidify its position in the global marketplace? It’s about more than just reacting to crises. It’s about proactive planning, embracing technology, and fostering strong partnerships.

Pilz: I/O Systems PSSuniversal – Two Solutions for Automation & Safety

Alongside the proven technology of the first generation, I/O systems PSSuniversal with head modules and corresponding I/O modules, the remote I/O system PSSuniversal 2 is continuing the success story. Improvements to mechanics, handling and diagnostics show the way to the new universal generation. The communication modules PSSuniversal and PSSuniversal 2 are used for decentralized networking and for transferring safety-related and non-safety-related signals at field level. Using PSSuniversal, a wide range of applications can be implemented by connecting up to 64 I/O modules. You can connect the communication modules to the PLC controllers PSSuniversal or other higher-level controllers.

  • Siemens: SIRIUS 3RV2 Circuit Breakers

SIRIUS 3RV2 motor starter protectors reliably intervene in three different cases. In the event of a short-circuit – current >13 times the rated current – the short-circuit releases isolate the faulty load feeder from the power supply within only a few milliseconds. Greater damage, caused by fires for example, can thus be avoided. The motor starter protector features a lockable operating mechanism for manual closing/opening, to be used for example while carrying out repairs. The overload release isolates the load from the power supply if it is loaded with an overcurrent for a certain time. Tripping is based on a specific time-current characteristic. This prevents possible damage to the load and the system. The overload release also trips in the event of phase failure or extreme phase unbalance.

  • Yaskawa: VFD Panels and Short Circuit Current

If you ignore the short circuit current rating (SCCR) of an industrial panel it might just go away anyway. By go away I mean that the panel might just self-destruct. If the available current or energy that reaches the panel in the event of a short circuit in the panel exceeds the levels that the panel can safely interrupt or contain, that energy has to go somewhere. It is the unpredictability of what will happen first that makes an insufficient SCCR so dangerous. Maybe the circuit breaker will explode while trying to open or maybe not open at all because the internals have welded shut? What happens then? Maybe the energy will find a path to ground and a shock hazard is created.
