PAM03 Photoelectric Amplifier: A Powerful Solution for Harsh Environments

The Carlo Gavazzi PAM03 amplification module can operate alone, controlling 3 MOF… sensor sets. Up to 10 amplifiers can also be connected automatically in a master/slave setup via the built-in communication port sharing power and controlling up to 30 MOF… sensor sets. All connected MOF… sensors are multiplexed, eliminating crosstalk.

Due to their signal strength, the combination of MOF… sensor sets and PAM03 amplifiers are suitable for environments with high amounts of dust or fog like automatic industrial doors, stone crushing conveyors, wood working machinery, car washes or other applications where a photoelectric sensor must work despite a build-up of dust and dirt or sense through fog, vapor or similar visibility hindrances.

The Carlo Gavazzi photoelectric PAM03 amplifiers are available in a plastic (PC/ABS) IP20 approved housing material.

Highlights

  • Reduced Machine Set-Up Time: Integrated alignment control allows optimized adjustment of the sensors by means of flashing yellow LEDs combined with two distance setup modes: Automatic or manual via a trimmer. Excess gain and maximum distance are selectable via the DIP switches.
  • Reduced Machine Down-Time: Built-in diagnostics: Tri-color LEDs show what type of error occurred and where, making fault finding quick and easy. Alarm output: Allows for predictive maintenance instead of waiting until built up dust or ice blind the sensors.
  • Sensor Test Function: A mute input on PAM03 allows the sensor system to be remotely tested in order to comply with the European standards for industrial automatic doors.
  • Reliable Detection: The combination with the powerful MOF… sensor sets allows for reliable detection despite refracting icy vapor or high levels of dust in the environment.
  • High Neighbor Immunity: The highest neighbor immunity is achieved by multiplexing all connected MOF-family sensors, eliminating crosstalk. Up to 10 connected modules (Master/Slave set-up) can control up to 30 multiplexed sensor sets.
  • Approvals: International Door Standards EN12453, EN12978, UL325 and UL508.
  • Listed: cULus.

Overview

The new PAM03 amplifier has been designed based on customer demands combined with Carlo Gavazzi’s solid experience in harsh environments gained during the last forty years. The PAM03 amplifier module can operate alone, controlling 3 sets of MOF… sensors.

“The PAM03… sensors system has been developed to operate in Industries such as automatic industrial doors and gates, stone crushing machine conveyor, car-wash systems and all applications that require sensors to work despite a build-up of dust and dirt or sense through dust, vapor or similar visibility hindrances.” Torben Rochat International Product Manager says. “With the launch of this photoelectric sensor amplifier we are ready to challenge the toughest sensing applications, thanks to its ease of use and service.”

Developed in Carlo Gavazzi’s competence center in Denmark, this photoelectric sensor amplifier module has been designed to fulfill the industrial requirements in providing reliable detection of up to 50 m sensing distance.

EtherCAT Reaches 88 Million Nodes – Strong Growth Despite Difficult Market Conditions

EtherCAT Technology Group (ETG) now reports around 88 million EtherCAT nodes worldwide and even if the pace of growth in recent years could not be maintained due to the current global economic climate and the after-effects of chip overstocking, the result is impressive: another 11 million EtherCAT nodes were added in 2024 – an outstanding result in a challenging business environment. These node figures are very reliable as they are based on actual chip sales, which are reported by the chip manufacturers to Beckhoff Automation, the inventor of EtherCAT technology. “And they have no interest in exaggerating these figures, as this would entail additional costs for them,” explains Martin Rostan, Executive Director of the EtherCAT Technology Group. With EtherCAT, the technology license is included directly in the chip, so there are no additional license fees for device manufacturers and users. Beckhoff uses the license revenue to finance the activities of the EtherCAT Technology Group and thus the ecosystem surrounding the technology.

  • PULS Power: PIANO PIC Series

The cost-oriented PIANO PIC series includes 1-phase 24V and 48V DIN rail power supplies with 120W, 240W or 480W output power. The PIANO product family is focused on basic functionality without compromising efficiency, durability or reliability. For applications which are operated exclusively in areas, where no wide range input is needed (e.g. Europe, China or India) PULS offers units with an AC input voltage of 200-240V. These units are based on a simpler circuit design and less components, which allows further cost reduction.

  • AutomationDirect Adds 22-Gauge Machine Tool Wire

Insulation type MTW machine tool wire is now available in 22-gauge from AutomationDirect. Existing MTW wire sizes are 20 AWG to 10 AWG. The 22 AWG wire offers an 8% smaller diameter with a 3 amp 600-volt rating which is needed for many types of terminal block connections that cannot accept larger wire. MTW wire is designed and approved for use in industrial and commercial equipment.

Design Systems Canada Provides Insights on the Future of Supply Chains in Canada

The current state of Canadian manufacturing and its intricate supply chain is one of significant change. Over the past few years, global events have exposed vulnerabilities, forcing us to rethink how we move goods and materials. The reality is stark: relying solely on distant, complex supply lines leaves businesses exposed. Recent disruptions have taught us that lesson.  Within these challenges lie significant opportunities. Currently there is a powerful shift towards supply chain resilience; a concept that goes beyond simply recovering from setbacks. It’s about building systems that anticipate and withstand shocks. One crucial strategy gaining traction is nearshoring. Bringing production closer to home not only reduces lead times and shipping costs but also strengthens local economies. Consider this: a recent study by the Canadian Manufacturers & Exporters (CME) indicated that 78% of Canadian manufacturers are actively exploring or have implemented nearshoring strategies. This trend isn’t just a fleeting response; it’s a strategic move to build long-term stability. The role of Supply Chain Ontario and similar initiatives cannot be overstated. These programs are vital in fostering collaboration, providing resources, and driving innovation. They are helping businesses navigate the complexities of modern supply chains, from implementing advanced technologies to optimizing logistics. But what about the future? How can Canada truly solidify its position in the global marketplace? It’s about more than just reacting to crises. It’s about proactive planning, embracing technology, and fostering strong partnerships.
