Custody Transfer System Integrator: Endress+Hauser Canada’s Sole-Source Approach Reduces Engineering Gaps and Overlaps, Minimizes Scope Ambiguity & Accelerates Project Execution
The natural gas industry – upstream, midstream and downstream – is facing increasing regulatory scrutiny and commercial risk. Endress+Hauser Canada is addressing this by creating a new standard for implementing custody transfer measurement: a fully integrated solution designed and delivered by it as sole-source provider.
Endress+Hauser Canada serves as a custody transfer system integrator for all aspects of a project, thereby reducing risk, simplifying execution, improving measurement certainty, and providing a single point of accountability from conception through commissioning.
Often, custody transfer projects employ a fragmented supply chain, which exposes the operator to a number of risks. The ultrasonic flow meter is procured from one vendor, the flow computer from another, the chromatograph from a third, fabrication from a local machine shop, calibration from an independent laboratory, and engineering services from an external consultant. That often creates multiple interfaces, competing responsibilities, documentation challenges, schedule and integration risks, and uncertainty over who ultimately owns measurement performance.
Endress+Hauser Canada’s sole-source approach reduces engineering gaps and overlaps, minimizes scope ambiguity, accelerates project execution, and provides greater confidence that the measurement system will perform as intended. It’s suitable for gas producers, midstream and pipeline companies, LNG facilities, utilities and large industrial consumers. It applies equally well to greenfield installation or retrofits, as well as RNG and carbon capture custody transfers.
For each installation, Endress+Hauser Canada supplies a complete custody transfer meter run solution based on its proven FLOWSIC600-XT ultrasonic flow meter. This legally defensible solution combines flow, pressure, temperature and gas composition into a fully compensated energy measurement platform.
Each project is developed according to AGA Report No. 9 (AGA9) custody transfer requirements while supporting Measurement Canada legal-for-trade compliance where required.
The FLOWSIC600-XT is paired with engineered meter run assemblies designed and manufactured in accordance with AGA9. The complete solution incorporates properly designed upstream and/or downstream spool sections, flow conditioners, pressure measurement ports, temperature measurement locations. Pressure transmitters are installed at the ultrasonic measurement location, while temperature elements are positioned in accordance with custody transfer best practices to ensure accurate flow calculations under operating conditions.
Configuration possibilities include unidirectional and bidirectional meter runs, compact and low-pressure-loss configurations, designs up to Class 2500 pressure ratings, standard and low-temperature carbon steel, and stainless-steel constructions and custom branch connections for instrumentation, analytical devices, and inspection.
Systems can include fiscal flow computer communications infrastructure, hazardous-area instrumentation and integrated control system interfaces. The result is pressure and temperature compensated flow calculations suitable for fiscal measurement, regulatory reporting, and commercial transactions.
For customers transacting based on energy rather than volume alone, Endress+Hauser Canada can engineer analytical measurement packages incorporating gas sampling, sample conditioning, gas chromatography, and energy computation. The meter run can incorporate dedicated sample extraction points to support compositional analysis and real-time gas quality determination. By integrating process analytics directly into the custody transfer system, operators gain greater confidence in commercial transactions while reducing uncertainty associated with changing gas composition.
All projects are supported by comprehensive mechanical and electrical engineering from Endress+Hauser Canada covering material selection, pressure boundary design, flow conditioner selection, nozzle and branch connection design, welding specifications, hydrostatic testing requirements, non-destructive examination plans, fabrication oversight and can include CRN certification wher required.
Following fabrication, systems undergo high-pressure calibration at accredited Canadian facilities recognized for custody transfer applications and operating under ISO 17025-accredited quality systems.
With Endress+Hauser Canada acting as the prime accountability partner, customers benefit from working with a single supplier, single engineering team, single project manager that are following a single fabrication and calibration strategy according to a single delivery schedule.
Endress+Hauser Canada supports the project after the system is in commercial operation. The company services the FLOWSIC600-XT, and when the time nears to recalibrate the meter, usually in the sixth year of operation, it will alert the customer and help plan that process. Sole-sourcing from Endress+Hauser Canada can assure continual customer-transfer certainty through the entire life cycle.
