iTHERM TrustSens: New Version with a 39°C Reference Point Extends Automated, Traceable In-Situ Calibration to Suitable Hygienic & Aseptic Processes That Do Not Reach Steam-Sterilization Temperatures
The world’s only self-calibrating thermometer – iTHERM TrustSens TM37x (TM371 metric/TM372 imperial) from Endress+Hauser – is now available with either a 39°C (102°F) self-calibration reference point or the proven 118°C (244°F) version. This new version with a 39°C reference point extends automated, traceable in-situ calibration to suitable hygienic and aseptic processes that do not reach steam-sterilization temperatures.
The 39°C reference point means the self-calibration capability of iTHERM TrustSens can be deployed in processes including Cleaning-in-Place (CIP), pasteurization, distillation and drying/dehydration in food and beverage, as well as life-science processes such as bioreactors, coating, fluidized-bed drying and blood-plasma fractionation. Suitability depends on the process profile, device configuration and required documentation workflow.
iTHERM TrustSens supports traceable temperature measurement through event-based inline self-calibration without removing the thermometer from the process. By detecting sensor deviation earlier, it can help increase process reliability, support audit preparation and reduce the effort associated with conventional recalibration.
Self-calibration helps reduce the risk of undetected drift between scheduled offline sensor calibrations, while lowering downtime. Calibration records are stored in the device and, depending on the selected integration, can be accessed through HART, locally or via cloud-based services, for modern asset management and compliance-support strategies.
Self-calibration is triggered automatically when the process reaches the defined temperature and cooling-rate conditions for the selected reference point. For the new 39°C version, this requires a suitable heating phase above that reference point followed by controlled cooling through the calibration range; it is not triggered simply because a process operates near 39°C.
At the heart of the temperature probe is a unique sensor unit consisting of a primary Pt100 temperature sensor and a highly accurate integrated reference with long‑term stability. The reference sensor uses a physical fixed point based on the Curie temperature and therefore serves to regularly calibrate the primary sensor.
The integrated smart electronics feature advanced diagnostic functions, categorized in line with the NE107 NAMUR recommendation and transmitted via HART. Status signals are also indicated locally by means of an integrated LED.
Endress+Hauser’s proprietary Heartbeat Technology supports device diagnostics and verification throughout the lifecycle of the device, helping operators maintain confidence in measurement performance.
Data from the last 350 calibrations is stored directly in the device (FIFO memory). This provides device and process transparency and can support trend analysis, maintenance planning and risk-based calibration strategies.
Years of extensive load tests over many thousands of calibration cycles, in the laboratory and in the field, have confirmed the maturity and reliability of the solution.
The device also carries numerous international approvals and certificates, including hygienic guidelines in accordance with EHEDG, ASME BPE, FDA, 3‑A, EC 1935/2004, EC 2023/2006 and EU 10/2011, CRN and CSA. The self-calibrating iTHERM TrustSens is especially relevant in regulated hygienic and aseptic environments, including GMP applications where traceable calibration evidence supports quality and audit workflows.
